The model is designed to support all schools across the Trust in delivering ambitious education for every child, whilst recognising the unique context of each community we serve. It creates a shared language for improvement and ensures that our work is aligned with our Trust values of Belonging, Flourishing, Leadership, Partnership and Transformation.
A Connected Approach to Improvement
Our School Improvement Model is built around four interconnected stages that create a continuous cycle of improvement:
1. Connect and Engage
Outstanding learning begins with strong relationships, shared purpose and a positive culture. In this phase, leaders and teachers create the conditions for success by:
- Sharing the bigger picture and establishing a clear vision for learning
- Encouraging curiosity, inquiry and critical thinking through purposeful questioning
- Developing oracy, confidence and communication skills
- Creating safe, inclusive and high expectation learning environments
This stage ensures that pupils are engaged, motivated and ready to learn, while staff, families and communities understand and contribute to the wider vision of the school.
2. Explain and Model
High quality teaching is at the heart of school improvement. This stage focuses on ensuring that new learning is carefully structured and expertly delivered through:
- Introducing new content in small, manageable steps
- Providing scaffolds and appropriate challenge to build confidence and deepen understanding
- Modelling thinking clearly and making learning visible through guided practice and worked examples
Drawing on Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction and evidence informed pedagogy, this phase ensures that pupils develop secure foundations before moving towards greater independence.
3. Practice
Learning becomes secure when pupils are given opportunities to rehearse, apply and refine their understanding. In this stage, teachers support pupils through:
- Independent practice that builds fluency and automaticity
- Timely and personalised feedback that moves learning forward
- Regular checks for understanding using retrieval practice and spaced learning strategies
This approach enables pupils to develop resilience, confidence and mastery across the curriculum.
4. Review, Reflect and Respond
Continuous improvement relies on thoughtful evaluation and responsive action. In this phase, schools use evidence intelligently to review impact and plan next steps through:
- Meaningful assessment that informs teaching and learning
- Raising standards meetings focused on pupil achievement and progress
- Collaborative FAR (Focused Accountability Review) peer to peer reviews that support and challenge leaders to drive school improvement
- Ongoing self evaluation and refinement of practice based on evidence and reflection
The FAR review process is reinforced through the Trust’s Quality Assurance Framework, ensuring that improvement activity is robust, consistent and aligned to Trust priorities. Through professional dialogue, collaboration and accountability, schools are empowered to respond swiftly to need and secure sustained improvement.
School to School Support and Trust Expertise
Collaboration is central to the Brighter Futures Learning Partnership Trust approach. Our schools benefit from a strong culture of school to school support, where expertise is shared across the Trust to strengthen leadership, teaching and outcomes for pupils.
This includes support from Trust school improvement professionals and OFSTED experienced consultants who bring expertise across all key stages and phases of education. Leaders and staff work collaboratively to share effective practice, provide targeted support and develop sustainable improvement strategies tailored to individual school contexts.
By connecting schools through networks, peer review and collaborative practice, we create collective responsibility for improvement and ensure that no school works in isolation.
Professional Growth and Coaching
We believe that investing in people is essential to improving outcomes for children. Professional growth is therefore a key foundation of our School Improvement Model.
Through high quality coaching, mentoring and professional development, staff are empowered to strengthen teaching and learning whilst developing confidence, expertise and leadership capacity. Our coaching culture promotes reflective practice, professional dialogue and continuous improvement, giving staff greater agency in shaping and improving their own practice.
Professional development across the Trust is evidence informed, collaborative and aligned to school priorities, ensuring that staff at every stage of their career are supported to flourish.
The Foundations of Our Model
Our School Improvement Model is underpinned by several key drivers that strengthen capacity across every school:
- Culture – fostering trust, openness and continuous improvement
- Professional Growth and Coaching – investing in staff development and leadership at every level
- Communication – ensuring clarity, consistency and strong stakeholder engagement
- Partnerships – working collaboratively across schools, families and communities
- Wellbeing – supporting staff and pupil wellbeing to enable success
These foundations help create schools where both children and adults can flourish.
Making School Improvement Sustainable
Improvement is not viewed as a one off initiative, but as a continuous cycle driven by evidence, reflection and collaboration. Across the Trust, schools are supported through:
- Clear strategic priorities aligned to Trust vision and local context
- Strong leadership and governance
- Robust systems and quality assurance processes
- Effective use of data and insight to inform decision making
- Capacity building and sustainable improvement planning
By combining evidence informed practice with collaboration across our family of schools, we ensure that every learner benefits from consistently high quality education and opportunity.
Improving Outcomes for Every Learner, Every Day
Our School Improvement Model reflects our commitment to ensuring that all children, regardless of background or starting point, experience exceptional teaching, inclusive environments and ambitious opportunities.
Through connected practice, strong partnerships and a culture of continuous improvement, we work together to transform lives through education and create brighter futures for every child.
